Minnesota Parkway Slope Case Study

Three stages of a hillside: eroded bare soil with debris, partially restored slope with new retaining wall and matting, and stabilized grassy slope with lush green vegetation.

Record rainfall caused a massive landslide on a steep 1:1 slope above a Minneapolis parkway, closing a popular biking, walking and commuter route and raising stability, environmental and regulatory concerns near a hospital and clinic. Engineers, contractors and Profile Products rebuilt the slope using soil testing, starter fertilizer and ProGanics® Biotic Soil Media™ to increase organic matter and improve soil fertility in depleted topsoil. The GreenArmor® System—combining Futerra® 7020 Turf Reinforcement Mat and Flexterra® HP-FGM®—stabilized the slope, protected seed from erosion and strengthened developing root zones. The approach helped vegetation fully establish in less than 2 months, providing a green alternative to hard armor.

Key Points

  • Record rainfall triggered a landslide on a steep 1:1 slope above a Minnesota parkway, closing the road and requiring careful slope stabilization with significant environmental and regulatory considerations near a hospital and clinic.
  • Soil testing revealed low organic matter in the new topsoil, leading to the use of ProGanics Biotic Soil Media to raise organic levels and add biochar, seaweed extract, humic acid and endomycorrhizae.
  • The GreenArmor System combined Futerra 7020 Turf Reinforcement Mat and Flexterra HP-FGM to stabilize soil, protect seed from erosion and help strengthen the root zone of vegetation.
  • ProGanics and the GreenArmor System helped the seed become fully established in less than 2 months while offering a more aesthetically pleasing and environmentally superior alternative to hard armor with installation cost 30–50% less.
