Stagecoach Trail Organics set out to combat ammonia challenges in a pullet barn using Profile Environmental Care®.
Stagecoach Trail spread 2 tons of Profile Environmental Care on the concrete barn floor, then applied a layer (3 inches) of bedding on top. After 3 weeks, the flock manager noticed a slight increase in moisture and ammonia but quickly resolved the issue by running the heat and fans manually for three days.
Any excess moisture dried up quickly, ammonia levels dropped, and the air cleared of dust. After three days, the heaters were returned to normal operation, keeping the house at normal temperatures resulting in safe levels of ammonia. From that point on, only one fan was needed to vent after this which reduced the heater usage resulting in lower operating cost. When the flock was harvested, the floor was clean, easy to turn, and most importantly, dry.
Unexpectedly, another important improvement was that there was visibly less “dust in the air” which can be a respiratory stress vector for the birds.
Challenge
Keeping a 21,168 ft barn a healthy and thriving environment for 2500 pullets and decreasing the ammonia is a challenge, especially in the winter. High levels of gaseous ammonia is unhealthy for birds, especially the young chicks. Reduction of risk becomes a priority during this stage of growth.
Results
A cleaner and drier barn with lower levels of ammonia resulted in, not only a healthier bird environment, but also reduced seasonal fuel usage resulting in a 30% reduction in fuel use or nearly $4,000 cost savings.
