Turface® Helps Launch Future Football MVPs

At Hershey High School in Hershey, Pennsylvania, a heavily used football field for the Big 33 all-star game struggled with hard native soil, heavy rainfall and poor drainage. Grounds staff partnered with Davis Landscape and Seedway to rebuild the field using Profile Products LLC’s Turface, incorporating the granular soil amendment into the top five inches of new topsoil beneath a 12-inch crown, irrigation system and new sod. Turface absorbs excess water, conditions the soil to resist compaction and adds permanent water and air-holding space, helping provide solid, safe footing. The renovated surface stays drier, feels soft underfoot and has inspired the school to use Turface in additional athletic and multi-purpose fields.

Key Points

  • Football field hosting the Big 33 and multiple school-affiliated programs saw continuous use from March to November, leading to wear, poor drainage and recurring maintenance issues.
  • Rebuild strategy added new topsoil, a 12-inch crown and irrigation, with two trailer loads of Turface incorporated into the top five inches before sodding.
  • Turface helps provide solid, safe footing by absorbing excess water, preventing muddy, torn-up turf, conditioning soil to resist compaction and adding permanent water and air-holding space.
  • Field & Fairway™ Emerald delivers the same benefits as Turface in a smaller-size, green-colored particle for topdressing, rapidly drying muddy, wet areas and disguising worn spots until new turf grows back.
