Keep them firm and level
Base paths need to be level and firm to provide traction for the athletes.
- They should not have lips that prevent water from running off of the infield.
- Paths can contain greater clay and silt levels (up to 60% to 80% clay) in the soil to maintain their firmness, or simply manage your moisture to keep the base paths firm.
- Incorporate 2 to 4 bags of Turface® conditioner 2 inches deep, and 2 bags on the surface of the base paths from home plate to first and from home plate to third base to control moisture and provide traction for the athletes. Reapply 2 bags as topdressing as often as necessary for traction and moisture control.
Dragging and Raking
Base paths need to be dragged or raked to keep them in good condition.
If the paths are too narrow to effectively use a drag, the same benefits of dragging can be accomplished by using a landscape rake to scarify the base paths. This should be done lengthwise instead of side to side. Side-to-side raking will push loose materials into the turf and will create lips that prevent water from running off of the infield.
