“More Than A Game” Builds Kids’ Baseball Dreams (Sports Turf: April 2017)

Empty baseball field with a clear home plate, orange-brown infield dirt, green grass outfield, and tall trees in the background under a partly cloudy blue sky.

More Than A Game is a charity created to turn kids’ baseball dreams into reality in underserved communities. Emerging from the Marshall University baseball program, it has, since 2012, brought the joys of sports to locations inside and outside the U.S. through instruction, equipment donations and, especially, field construction. Partnering with Turface Athletics® and Profile Products, the organization uses Turface MVP® infield conditioner and donated transport funds to build and renovate diamonds from Panama to Colombia, the Dominican Republic and U.S. communities. These fields provide safer playing surfaces and let kids play on the same type of infield used in the majority of professional ballparks in the United States.

Key points:

  • More Than A Game has been bringing the joys of sports to underserved places both inside and outside the U.S. since 2012 through instruction, equipment donations and field construction.
  • The charity grew from the Marshall University baseball program and early community service projects, expanding internationally after a trip to Panama highlighted the need for quality baseball fields.
  • In 2013, More Than A Game returned to Panama with ten tons of Turface MVP, an infield conditioner manufactured by Profile Products, the parent company of Turface Athletics, along with donated transport funds.
  • Turface products are used in the majority of professional ballparks in the United States, so putting the same packing clays and infield conditioners on community fields provides a safe surface and helps kids dream of playing at a higher level.
