In remote Norway House, Manitoba, the community needed to quickly turn two bare baseball fields—only one with irrigation—into playable turf. Soil tests revealed very poor conditions, with 8.1 pH and 1.3% organic matter, and hauling in topsoil would have been costly. Profile® recommended applying ProGanics® Biotic Soil Media™ (BSM™) beneath sod to supply organic matter, modify soil chemistry and initiate vegetation establishment. Both irrigated and unirrigated fields developed strong root systems that penetrated into the native soil and, years later, continue to provide safe, thriving fields that are used from sun up to sun down during the summer.
Key Points
- Remote community needed two baseball fields ready for play despite poor soil, limited irrigation and costly access to topsoil.
- ProGanics® BSM™ was applied at 5,600 kg/ha (5,000 lb/ac) with 18-24-12 fertilizer, enhanced gypsum and Kentucky Bluegrass/Fescue sod.
- Roots on both irrigated and unirrigated fields penetrated the ProGanics and native soil, creating healthy, established turf used throughout the summer.
- “I would most certainly put sod over ProGanics again… It proved its worth,” said Damon Sump, Regional Sales Manager, Profile Products.
