Infographic titled “PATTERNS grass infields” showing three dragging patterns for baseball or softball infields.

Guidance for grass infields using three dragging patterns: finishing, elliptical and overlapping circles. Each pattern begins at either first or third base and keeps dragging at least one foot away from the edge of the grass or inside the grassline to help prevent lips. Overlapping circles are described as excellent for both finishing and maintaining a level infield. Rules of Thumb emphasize never dragging faster than you can walk and always staying at least one foot away from the edge of the grass.

  • Finishing pattern: start from either first or third base, staying at least one foot away from the edge of the grass.
  • Elliptical pattern: start at first or third base and mat drag at least one foot inside the grassline to prevent lips, following a figure 8 pattern dragging no faster than you can walk.
  • Overlapping circles pattern for grass infields is excellent for both finishing and maintaining a level infield; drag very slow and stay at least one foot away from the edge of the grass.
  • Rules of Thumb: never drag faster than you can walk, and stay at least one foot away from the edge of the grass.
