Luxor Creek Bridge Case Study

The British Columbia Ministry of Transportation struggled to establish vegetation near the renovated Luxor Creek Bridge, a key wildlife corridor, due to poor soil with low organic matter, high pH, steep slopes and wildlife trampling. After soil testing, Brock White worked with Profile to apply ProGanics® Biotic Soil Media™ (BSM™) with ProPlus® products JumpStart™, BioPrime® and Aqua-pHix®, capped with Flexterra® High Performance Flexible Growth Medium® (HP-FGM®), the industry’s highest performing hydraulically applied erosion control product. Compared with standard seed and wood with tack mulch, the ProGanics-treated quadrant showed better vegetation establishment and erosion protection, with improved soil and root development still evident two years later and guiding future BC MOT projects.

  • Soil testing revealed poor soil conditions with 8.7 pH and < 0.5% organic matter near the Luxor Creek Bridge wildlife corridor.
  • Application included ProGanics BSM at 5,600 kg/ha (5,000 lb/ac), Aqua-pHix at 94 L/ha (10 gal/ac), JumpStart at 47 L/ha (5 gal/ac), BioPrime at 179 kg/ha (160 lb/ac), Flexterra HP-FGM at 4,480 kg/ha (4,000 lb/ac) and 18-18-18 fertilizer at 81 kg/ha (72 lb/ac).
  • Areas treated with ProGanics and Flexterra showed better vegetation establishment and erosion protection than areas treated only with seed and wood with tack mulch.
  • Two years later, substantial root development and sustained vegetation in the ProGanics-treated area led BC MOT to plan ProGanics use on future poor-soil projects.
