Charlotte Douglas International Airport Project Brief

The Charlotte-Douglas International Airport needed to revegetate 25 acres (10 ha) of its grounds after recent construction. Areas near the end of one runway were particularly problematic, and their lack of vegetation was consistently being cited as an infraction. Originally, the project specifications called for using compost blankets on the site to encourage growth. The contractor bidding the project asked Profile^® to meet with the engineer to discuss other soil amendment options that would perform better.

During a meeting with the engineer, Profile representatives and the contractor demonstrated how using ProGanics Biotic Soil Media™ (BSM) instead of compost could lead to better results at a lower cost. ProGanics BSM, a hydraulically applied Engineered Soil Media™ (ESM™), provides the necessary organic matter and soil building components to modify the soil chemistry, initiate growth and sustainably establish vegetation. ProGanics BSM is applied much more quickly and with less labor than compost blankets. Following the presentation, the engineer approved the use of ProGanics BSM as a equal to compost.

Profile started by taking a soil test to determine what adjustments needed to be made to assure a more favorable growing environment and to select the right plant species for sustainable vegetation. The team first applied ProGanics BSM followed by an application of environmentally friendly TerraMatrix Stabilized Mulch Matrix (SMM). Terra-Matrix SMM forms an erosion-resistant blanket to prevent sediment loss and dispersion of soil particles. Ultimately, this approach saved the project time, which translated into saved money. Now the site has lush, sustainable vegetation.
