Griffith Park Fire Restoration

After the 2007 fires torched more than 1,000 acres of Los Angeles’ Griffith Park, officials faced an urgent threat of severe soil erosion and potential mudslides endangering roads and homes. A Griffith Park Fire Recovery Team of 31 government entities worked with Profile® Products LLC, Western States Reclamation Inc. and Watersaver Co. Inc. to stabilize 500 acres of burned hillsides. They selected Profile’s Hydro-Blanket® bonded fiber matrix (BFM) and Terra-Matrix® stabilized mulch matrix (SMM), environmentally safe and biodegradable solutions applied primarily by helicopter. The cross-linked hydro-colloidal tackifier formulations helped achieve 100 percent coverage and prevented significant soil erosion problems over the winter rainy season.

  • Due to steep, inaccessible slopes and tight timelines, Erickson Air-Crane Inc. applied the pre-blended products aerially; approximately 90 percent of the project was completed in 10 days, and the bonded materials prevented significant soil erosion problems over the winter rainy season.
