Carolina Outdoor Services needed a reliable way to vegetate 2.2 acres of vertical Mechanically Stabilized Earthen (MSE) walls up to 46 feet high on a former Raleigh golf course redevelopment. Flexterra® FGM® and a custom SlopeMaster™ Professional Erosion Control Seed Mix were applied using a two-step hydroseeding process to overcome access challenges and secure seed-to-soil contact on the geotextile wall face. ProPlus® agronomic formulations JumpStart™, BioPrime® and NeutraLime™ were added to improve soil conditions, nutrient delivery and pH. After severe storms and flooding, the vegetated walls held strong, providing a permanent, sustainable solution without costly reseeding.
Key Points
- Vegetation was established on 2.2 acres of vertical MSE walls stretching up to 46 feet at a Raleigh, North Carolina shopping center and pedestrian greenway redevelopment.
- A two-step hydroseeding process applied seed, fertilizer and soil amendments with a trace amount of Flexterra FGM, then capped the wall with the remaining Flexterra to ensure seed-to-soil contact on the geotextile face.
- A custom SlopeMaster Professional Erosion Control Seed Mix with Myco-Advantage™, Germ Max™ and multiple turf species was combined with JumpStart at two and a half gallons per acre, BioPrime at 40 pounds per acre and NeutraLime at 80 pounds per acre.
- Following severe storms and heavy flooding, the Flexterra system delivered a permanent and sustainable vegetative solution, and the project has never required reseeding or touch-up.
