San Elijo Lagoon Restoration

Three side-by-side images show a wetland restoration: workers placing posts, a finished path by water and greenery, and wildflowers with a sunset over the restored landscape.

A $120 million restoration of the San Elijo Lagoon in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California, used Profile® Products solutions to perform erosion control and revegetation around one of California’s largest, environmentally sensitive wetlands. ProGanics® DUAL™, supported by JumpStart™, BioPrime® and Aqua-pHix®, was prescribed using Profile’s PS3 soil testing software to address deficient soils, steep slopes and high pH, salts and bicarbonates. The eco-friendly, biodegradable system helped establish thick vegetation, native wildflowers and grasses within months, minimized the need to import new topsoil, and contributed to the project earning the American Public Works Association Project of the Year and Profile Products’ Green Project of the Year Award for 2021.

Key Points

  • $120 million San Elijo Lagoon restoration required erosion control and revegetation around one of California’s largest, environmentally sensitive wetlands.
  • Profile’s PS3 soil testing identified soil deficiencies and guided a prescription using ProGanics DUAL at 5,500 lb/ac (6,164 kg/ha), JumpStart at 5 gal/ac (56 L/ha), BioPrime at 140 lb/ac (156 kg/ha) and Aqua-pHix at 6 lb/ac (6.7 kg/ha).
  • Installation in June 2021 produced thick vegetation and blooming native wildflowers by fall, with fully established grasses by January and reduced need to import new topsoil.
  • Environmentally friendly, biodegradable solutions supported habitat recovery and helped the project earn APWA Project of the Year and Profile Products’ Green Project of the Year Award for 2021.
